  33. [1] Crypto Experts, Net Citizens Speak Out Against Clipper
  34.  
  35. On January 24, many of the nation's top experts on cryptography,
  36. computer security, networks, privacy and civil liberties sent a letter
  37. to President Clinton urging that he withdraw the Clipper Chip proposal.
  38. The list included Whitfield Diffie, Martin Hellman, Ralph Merkle, Ron
  39. Rivest, George Davida, Peter Neumann and David Chaum.
  40.  
  41. Many other people expressed an interest in signing on.  In response,
  42. CPSR has set up an electronic petition drive to ask the President
  43. to withdraw the proposal.  Within days, thousands of people have
  44. already signed on.  Copies of the electronic petition will be delivered
  45. to President Clinton and Vice-President Gore at the end of the drive.

  47. To sign the petition, send the text "I oppose clipper" (no quotes)
  48. in the first line of a message to clipper.petition@cpsr.org

  52. [2] California Legislative Database Goes Online
  53.  
  54. The California Legislature now has an archive of legislative
  55. material available via Anonymous FTP and listserv on the Internet.
  56. Included in the database is the California Constitution, California
  57. law, and pending bills in the Assembly and Senate.
  58.  
  59. The archive was created after online activists led by Jim Warren,
  60. a CPSR member and columnist at Micro Times led a campaign on the
  61. Internet to pass AB1624. (see CPSR Alert 2.01, Sept 10, 1993).

  63. The archive is available at leginfo.public.ca.gov
  64.  
  65. A free Gopher server of the information is also available from
  66. svpal.org

  85.            in Cuba for circulating a petition seeking greater
  86.            academic and political freedom;

  88.         o  dismissals of environmental scientists and the closing
  89.            of an environmental research center in Mexico to
  90.            curtail criticism of environmental problems during
  91.            debate on the North American Free Trade Agreement; and
  92.   
  93.         o  misuse of science by Iraq in the damming of rivers to
  94.            dry up vast areas of wetlands and force the death or
  95.            emigration of their March Arab population.

  111. [4] Call for Discussion on CPSR Newsgroups

  113. CPSR has submitted a Request for Discussion (RFD) to create two
  114. new USENET newsgroups: comp.org.cpsr.news and comp.org.cpsr.talk.
  115.   
  116. Comp.org.cpsr.news will be a reflection of the cpsr-announce
  117. mailing list.  It will be moderated and only carry 1-2 messages per
  118. week including the CPSR Alert and other official CPSR releases, and
  119. announcements of relevant conferences.
  120.   
  121. Comp.org.cpsr.talk will be an unmoderated discussion group.  Topics
  122. will include privacy, the NII, working in the computer industry, and
  123. other areas of interest to CPSR members.
  124.  
  125. Formal discussion on the newsgroups is taking place in news.groups.
  126. If you have any substantive comments, you may post them there or
  127. by e-mail to either news-groups@cs.utexas.edu or

  147.    "Developing an Effective and Equitable Information Infrastructure"
  148.  Directions and Implications of Advanced Computing (DIAC-94) Symposium

  152. The National Information Infrastructure (NII) is being proposed as the
  153. next-generation "information superhighway" for the 90's and beyond.
  154. Academia, libraries, government agencies, as well as media and
  155. telecommunication companies are involved in the current development.
  156. Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) and other
  157. organizations believe that critical issues regarding the use of the NII
  158. deserve increased public visibility and participation and are using the
  159. DIAC Symposium to help address this concern.
  160.  
  161. The DIAC-94 symposium is a two-day event and will consist of
  162. presentations on the first day and workshops on the second day.  The
  163. DIAC Symposia are held biannually and DIAC-94 will be CPSR's fifth such
  164. conference.  We encourage your participation both through attending and
  165. through conducting a workshop.  We are currently soliciting workshop
  166. proposals.  We suggest proposals on the following themes, but any topic
  167. relating to the symposium theme is welcome.

  192. Workshops will be an hour and half in length.  The proposal should
  193. include title, presenter, purpose of workshop, references, and plan.
  194. Workshops should substantially involve the audience and proposals in
  195. which some group product or action plan is created are preferred.  As
  196. the proposals may be collected into a book, workshop proposals should
  197. be clear and informative to people who don't participate in the
  198. workshop.  Proposals are due February 15, 1994 and acceptance and
  199. rejection notices will be sent by March 15, 1994.  To discuss
  200. workshops, obtain a submission guide, or to submit proposals for
  201. workshops contact the program chair, Doug Schuler,
